October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, encourage important conversations, and support individuals and families throughout our communities.
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we recognize survivors and acknowledge the impact domestic violence can have on physical, mental, and emotional health. Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported. Increasing awareness, reducing stigma, listening without judgment, and connecting people with appropriate resources are important steps toward creating healthier and safer communities.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides an opportunity to recognize those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, remember those we have lost, and support survivors, caregivers, and families. It is also an important reminder to stay engaged in preventive health care. We encourage patients to speak with their health care providers about breast cancer risk factors and which screenings may be appropriate for them.
Several additional observances throughout October reflect priorities that are closely connected to Northern Valley Indian Health’s mission.
Mental Illness Awareness Week, October 4–10, and World Mental Health Day on October 10 encourage conversations about mental health, reducing stigma, and ensuring that individuals know seeking support is an important part of caring for overall health. Mental and emotional well-being are essential components of whole-person care.
On October 5, Child Health Day reminds us of the importance of supporting children’s physical, mental, emotional, and developmental health. Healthy communities begin with giving children and families access to the care, resources, and support they need to thrive.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 12 is an opportunity to honor the histories, cultures, traditions, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. At Northern Valley Indian Health, our commitment to Native communities is central to who we are. We remain dedicated to providing culturally responsive care, strengthening community partnerships, and honoring the communities we have the privilege to serve.
On October 15, Global Handwashing Day highlights one of the simplest tools we have to help prevent the spread of illness. Regular handwashing helps protect ourselves, our families, and those around us and remains an important part of everyday health and infection prevention.
These observances may focus on different aspects of health and well-being, but they share an important connection. Each reflects our commitment at Northern Valley Indian Health to prevention, education, safety, cultural respect, and compassionate care for the whole person.
Throughout October and all year long, we are grateful for the patients, families, employees, Tribal communities, community partners, and health care professionals who help us build healthier and stronger communities.
Wishing our NVIH community a safe, healthy, and meaningful October.
